Founder head of chambers (now retired)

W Ray Turner BSc HonDSc (Leeds Met) FRICS FCIOB FAE FCIArb

A chartered quantity surveyor, a founder partner of Turner and Holman in 1951, he was a practising arbitrator for several decades and a Member of the VAT and Duties Appeals Tribunals till 2001. Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators 1983/84, he was a founder member of the Society of Construction Law (now an Honorary Member) and of the Society of Construction Arbitrators and a Founder Vice-President of the Academy of Experts. Between 1994 and 2004 he was a visiting Professor at Leeds Metropolitan University, where he was the first Visiting Professor of Arbitration. He has lectured widely on arbitral topics in the UK and overseas, as well as on construction contracts and related insurances. Author of Arbitration Awards: A practical approach, 2005.

A chartered architect, chartered surveyor and chartered arbitrator, Richard Byrom is with Byrom Clark Roberts Limited, a multi-disciplinary construction consultancy employing fifty people with offices in Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and Chester. He has extensive experience of architectural job-running, building surveys and expert witness work and has been appointed as arbitrator in construction and professional disputes on many occasions over the last twenty years. He is a past Chairman of the RIBA President's Advisory Committee on Arbitration and on the RIBA and CIArb Arbitration Panels.

Michael Anthony Conway BSc(Hons) MSc DipArb FCIArb MRICS MCIOB FInstCES

A chartered quantity surveyor and chartered arbitrator with over 25 years experience in the UK contracting industry ranging from nuclear power installations, water treatment works, bridges, roads and railways to industrial building as well as prestige building development work, refurbishment and housing projects in both the private and public sectors. Now specialising in the field of dispute resolution he is a member of the panel of arbitrators of CIArb and a member of the panel of adjudicators of CIArb, RICS, TeCSA, AICA & CPA. Currently a director of Pye Consulting Group, a consultancy company specialising in arbitration, adjudication, ADR and expert witness work. Having gained a first class honours degree in Quantity Surveying, an MSc in Construction Law with merit and a Diploma in Arbitration he is a also a visiting lecturer in construction law at the University of Central Lancashire. He is a committee member of the NW Branch of CIArb and a member of Council of the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.

Having qualified as a chartered quantity surveyor in 1958, he re-qualified in 1971 as a chartered building surveyor. In sole practice since 1975, he concentrates on dispute work as expert witness, independent expert and arbitrator. Arbitral appointments have numbered over 500 from small documents-only disputes to large formal hearings. A chartered arbitrator, he has also been awarded the Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration. He has served as Chairman of the Building Surveying Division of the RICS Yorkshire Branch, Chairman of the North-East Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is a past President of the Society of Professional Engineers. He is also an Expert in Rights of Light.
